Panel session on Sanctions and the Iranian Economy
9th of March 2022
Chair: Fatemeh E. Moghadam (Founding Member of the IIEA & Hofstra University)
This session will cover the way in which sanctions led to changes in the composition of Iranian trade, with shifts including greater import dependence on China and greater export dependence on regional markets, and also touch on what the restoration of the JCPOA may mean for Iranian trade in the coming years. We will also discuss Iran’s energy sector, with special focus on the oil and gas sector. How the sanctions impacted capacity, productions, and exports and what are the expectations for where it will go from here. And finally we will be presented with evidence from survey data on living standards and employment in the aftermath of the US sanctions, showing that household welfare deteriorated after 2011, corresponding to the timing of US sanctions, but employment improved slightly.
The panel therefore focuses on the following three topics:
Sanctions and Changes in the Composition of Iranian Trade, Esfandyar Batmanghelidj (Bourse & Bazaar Foundation)
What did US sanctions do to Iran’s energy sector, and what is the outlook given possible scenarios?, Iman Nasseri (FGE Dubai)
Changes in household welfare and employment under US sanctions, Djavad Salehi-Isfahani (IIEA Board Member & Virginia Tech)
If you are interested to find out more, do read the papers by Djavad Salehi-Isfahani and Esfandyar Batmanghelidj.
