Panel session on Social Policy in Iran
10th of November 2021

The past four decades have seen various formulations of Iran’s post-revolutionary social justice agenda. Despite some achievements, many old challenges remain in areas such as inequality, providing access to social services and housing, creating employment opportunities and reducing poverty. Heated debates among candidates for the 2021 presidential elections were a witness to their significance. This panel focuses on major issues facing various social policy components and institutions in Iran. Speakers include three contributors to the forthcoming edited volume (by Pooya Alaedini), Social Policy in Iran: Main Components and Institutions , which is to appear under the Series, ‘Routledge Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa’ edited by Hassan Hakimian.

Chair: Hassan Hakimian (HBKU, SOAS & IIEA Board Member)

Speakers: Pooya Alaedini (University of Tehran), Davood Souri (Economic Policy Advisor, Tehran), and Behrouz Hady Zonooz (Allameh Tabataba’i University, Tehran)

Discussant: Mahmoud Messkoub (Erasmus University of Rotterdam)
